day nineteen: a name for God

date: saturday, january 21, 2012

scripture: Genesis 16:13-4

she gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” that is why the well was called Beer Lahai Ros; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered. (NIV)

meditation:

tonight, i had the honor and privilege of going to see RedTails, a new major motion picture about the success of an all-black military unit of fighter pilots during WWII. during the film, i loved the way they got their name. by painting the tails of their planes a distinct color (Red, of course), they were able to distinguish themselves while they were flying in the air. up in the air, of course, they distinguished themselves by their stellar strategy and performance. but, in a way the red tails of their planes announced their presence and became a trademark of their excellence.

which got me to thinking about God and the ways that God has distinguished Godself in our lives. the many times God has revealed who God is and what God is able to do in our lives. and how we have come to know God by God’s “stellar strategy and performance” in our lives. in the Bible, when figures had those kinds of encounters with God, they often gave God a name. in this case, Hagar, the Egyptian slave-woman to Abraham and Sarai, named God “El Roi,” or The God Who Sees, for her encounter of being deeply affirmed by the presence of God. her experience of seeing God and living through it.

what has set God apart in your life? what has God done that continues to astound you? perhaps you should give God a name that is particular to the experience that you’ve had with God. for example, often, when i think about the day i graduated from grad school, i still feel the feeling of having been pulled through that process by the hand of God. so, i name God, the God who pulls me through. or, when i think about my marriage and all that it took to get here, i name God, the God of completion.

what would you name God and what would you name God for?

prayer:

God, you’ve been wonderful and kind and gracious to me. faithful and consistent from day to day. patient and enduring through my mistakes. inspiring and uplifting through my discouraged moments. i name you these things because you’ve proven to be these things. and more. continue to allow me to experience you in deeply transformative and deeply personal ways, to ascribe to you more names that reflect my ever-expanding experience of you.

Amen and Ashe.

She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen[c] the One who sees me.” 14 That is why the well was called Beer Lahai Roi[d]; it is still there, between Kadesh and Bered.
